Could A Greater Toronto Area Be Getting A Red Light District?

img

If you’ve ever been to a red light district in some cities around the world, you know it’s quite the sight… Well now, Markham, a city in the Regional Municipality of York within the Greater Toronto Area could be getting one too.

A city councillor in Markham says it could be time for a red light district because bawdy houses are appearing in quiet residential neighbourhoods.

Councillor Don Hamilton has told news channels that perhaps the district should be zoned along with rooming houses and Airbnbs to a commercial or industrial area of the city. That would help law enforcement with control and prosecution. But to pull that off would be a big battle.

A handful of councillors are already speaking out against it.

Current federal law also says it is illegal to establish a bawdy house to sell sex. It’s not illegal to sell sex, just illegal to establish a bawdy house to sell it. It’s also illegal to purchase sex under the law.
