OCEAN’S 8 – Don’t you love a well-planned, impeccably executed heist? Of course, I would say, especially if no one is killed or hurt except –in this case– for the insurance company. But anyway, insurance companies –I’m sure– are extremely low in the list of people’s sympathies.

The women’s team has prepared everything to the minimum detail

“Ocean’s 8” directed by Gary Ross starts at the moment in which Debbie (Sandra Bullock) is presenting her case before the parole board, after five years in jail. Before being released, she is reminded of the conditions for her regained freedom, among them not to contact any person with a criminal record and not commit any new criminal offence. Debbie wastes no time in breaking such restrictions, after all, she spent five years thinking of a perfect plan for a heist of giant proportions which, she is very sure, would make the perpetrators immensely wealthy: 150 million is at stake.

Debbie’s first contact is Lou (Cate Blanchett) with whom she would start forming the team that should try the bold raid for the precious goal. An expensive necklace which will be worn by celebrity Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) at the Met Gala is the target of the group. Fashion designer Rose Weil (Helena Bonham Carter) who is not having a good time in her career, would be recruited to help since she would be in charge of dressing Daphne. Computer genius Nine Ball (Rihanna) will be in charge of all the technology-related aspects of the plan, from disabling security cameras to helping in a sophisticated process that would be essential for the actual robbery of the valuable piece.

Tammy (Sarah Paulson), an old friend of Debbie’s who combines her illegal business with her maternal duties; Amita (Mindy Kaling) a skilful jeweller, and Constance (Awkwafina), an effective pickpocket complete the team. They work very efficiently and with no internal conflicts –a message that women are perhaps better at teamwork than their men’s counterparts? The only little discord occurs when Debbie assigns a role in the scheme to an old flame, art dealer Claude Becker (Richard Armitage), but she would have a good reason to do that.

“Ocean’s 8” is an entertaining movie that would keep you attentive all the time (if not, you can miss some critical development of the plot). It is a well-written story (Olivia Milch and Gary Ross wrote it) if you forgive the implausibility of many of the situations, of course, great acting primarily on the part of Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock, whose characters can display charm and coldness with great easiness as the situations require it.

A film to be enjoyed and recommended to everyone, although the theme may not be of interest to young kids.
