We all can’t be lovers of spicy foods, however, if you are trying to refine your palate to be able to enjoy spicy foods, some items are great to start with. If you’re not used to having spicy food in your diet, you may not want to jump right into the hottest foods.

Jalapeno Poppers

Poppers are a classic choice for a spicy snack. Jalapenos are a type of spicy food that are enjoyable and about medium on the Scoville scale. What helps even further to balance the spice is the cheese in the poppers.

The best thing about poppers is they are popular enough that you can get them at most restaurants. In addition, you can purchase frozen jalapeno poppers from the store. However, poppers are not traditionally healthy as they are breaded and fried. Trying jalapenos by themselves is another way to add some spice.

Pickled jalapenos are a way to get a taste of spicey more healthily. Cooked pickled jalapenos take a bit of the spicy out as well if you’re looking to cool it down even further. Jalapenos are most commonly found on nachos or in salsa.

Pepper Jelly

This amazing glaze is a great way to incorporate some spice because it comes in many varieties. It’s balanced with sugar as well so you get a sweet and spicy combination. Conveniently, you can buy pepper jelly online and choose the amount of spicey you want.

Traditional pepper jelly is usually made with habanero, jalapeno, or serrano peppers. These are lower on the Scoville scale and this is the best place to start if you have never tried pepper jelly. This popular spread can be enjoyed in many different ways.

The most common way to have pepper jelly is usually with soft cheeses that you can spread on crackers. Pour some jelly over brie or cream cheese and serve with your favorite dunking products. Assuredly, this will have you riding the pepper jelly train in no time at all.

Cajun Seasoning

Lastly, another very popular choice to add some spice to your life is cajun seasoning. Cajun-style meals are available at many restaurants and are quite popular to cook with as well. Cajun-style foods are popular in the southern United States and really bring a kick to traditional foods.

You’ll find cajun sauces on pasta dishes, chicken, and seafood. Gumbo is a popular dish that requires cajun seasoning. Another cajun spiced meal is jambalaya. If you’re living in the south, spicy is most likely already well integrated into your diet.

Adding a bit of spice to your diet has health benefits as well as a delicious way to expand your palate. Hot foods speed up your metabolism, combat inflammation, and even can kill bacteria. Even just adding a bit of spice into your meals once a week can add some longevity to your life.

There are of course more ways to add a bit of spice to your diet. Purchase cumin, cayenne, red pepper, or turmeric at your local grocery store. You can sprinkle a bit of any of these into your meals to get just a hint of that spicy goodness.
