Most Common Causes of Basement Moisture

High moisture in the basement is not an uncommon problem. As a matter of fact, basements are considered to be damp places for a reason. While it is common, high moisture in the basement can be problematic. Moisture can cause structural damage, the growth of toxic mould, lead to a pest infestation, cause rot and many other issues. These are the key things that make the need for waterproofing Toronto important. But what exactly causes basement moisture?

Interior Water Leak

When trying to fix a moisture problem, you should start by checking for inside leaks. Water leaks can be from sinks, showers, washing machines, dishwashers, bad pipes, and so many other places. If an interior leak is the cause of the moisture problem, repairing the leak will solve the problem.

Ineffective Grading

Poor grading is the primary reason why rain and groundwater makes its way into the basement. The ground around the foundation needs to slope away from the house and not towards it. If there is no slope, water will start accumulating around the foundation and will, in time, be forced to get into your house. The problem is even more dire when the soil around the foundation is not compacted properly, and there are holes or cracks in your walls. Creating a slope that aims away from the house is the key to solving the basement moisture problem. The slope should be one inch per foot for a minimum of 6 feet.

Damaged Gutters and Downspouts

Gutters collect water from the roof and direct it to the downspouts, which then directs the water away from the house. If the gutters are missing or defective, rainwater will fall on the foundation. With time, the water will accumulate around the foundation and start to seep into your basement. Making sure the gutters are well maintained and clean will help prevent moisture problems.

Cracks in the Foundation

If there are cracks in the foundation, you can be certain that water will find its way into your basement. Water is at times the cause of these cracks, and if they are not fixed in good time, they will worsen and worsen the moisture problem. Cracks may also be formed if the floor joists aren’t connected to the foundation walls properly. Cracks need to be repaired fast. Contact an experienced company in waterproofing Toronto to help with the repairs.

Damaged Sump Pump

Does your house have a sump pit and sump pump? If you do and you still notice high moisture problems, chances are either the sump pit or sump pump is damaged. In this case, you need to bring in a professional to inspect the drainage system.

Condensation

Moisture problems can be caused by condensation. This occurs when warm, moist air comes into contact with the cool basement floors or walls. As the warm air cools, it creates moisture. To deal with this issue, you need to check the dryer and check the central air conditioner. You may also need to install a basement exhaust fan, increase air circulation or insulate the basement.
