COOKBOOK NOOK: Celebrate National Pie Day with two tasty pie recipe books

img

Who knew that National Pie Day was a real thing? An ‘unofficial holiday,’ National Pie Day is celebrated in Canada and the United States annually on January 23rd. The National Day Calendar has designated this day to celebrate pies including pie baking, pie eating—maybe even pie throwing? But why waste such a delicious treat?

The American Pie Council created National Pie Day in 1986 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Crisco, according to the National Day Calendar

From fruit pies to cream pies to savoury meat pies, any excuse to eat pie works for me!

We have sourced two amazing pie cookbooks which will inspire you to become a pie baker whether it is National Pie Day or any other day of the year!

Ken Haedrich is a pie master! In his new book Pie Academy: Master the Perfect Crust and 255 Amazing Fillings, Ken shows readers how to master the art of pie baking through his easy-to-follow recipes, enhanced with such beautiful life-like images you want to reach in and take a bite!

What I love most about Pie Academy is that Part One, Behind the Scenes, is like a lesson in ‘pie making 101’. All the basics of pie making are covered including The Pie Maker’s Tools, In the Pantry and an incredibly useful How to Make a Pie: A Step-by-Step Tutorial with photos to make pie making dead simple!

Part Two moves into The Wonderful World of Pie with recipes for every type of dough imaginable, plus chapters on Berry Pies, Summer Delights, Make Mine Apple, Cream Pies, From the Freezer (ice cream pies) and Small Packages (hand pies and more). In this hefty book you will discover enough recipes to make a different type of pie almost every day of the year!

You will find recipes for all your favourite pies like apple, raspberry, pumpkin and more, along with recipes for Canadian Butter Tarts, Caramel Banana Cream Pie, and must-try Coffee Mud Pie with Oreo Crust.

During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many of us are learning new skills like knitting or baking bread. Like bread making, pie baking is quite contagious—once you start, I find it is hard to stop (both baking pies and eating them that is!). There is no better way to become a skilled pie baker than with Ken Haedrich’s gorgeous new book Pie Academy!

The most difficult part of making a pie is often the crust. It takes some practice to get it exactly right. There are also several different types of crust which work best with certain kinds of fillings, as illustrated in the opening chapters of Book of Pie. The very first recipe in the book is called Perfect Piecrusts and it walks you through the steps on how to pull it off. This is followed by recipes for Sweet Crusts, Cookie Crust, Cocoa Crust, Graham Cracker Crust, and several other types of crusts, including a Gluten-Free Crust.

Just as there are several options when it comes to crusts, the sky is the limit when it comes to pie fillings. There are over 100 different pie recipes in chapters covering Cream, Custard & Pudding: Fruit, Nutty, Savory and Handpies. Just looking at the photos makes me want to get out my grandmother’s pie plates and start baking!

Most of the pie recipes are surprisingly short and easy to follow, such as the recipes for Chocolate Cream Pie, Raspberry Cream Pie, Cherry Pie and Strawberry Pie, while some recipes (like Boston Cream Pie) are somewhat more detailed. If you are looking for that big wow factor, try the recipe for Salted Caramel & Pecan Pie or the showstopping Chocolate Meringue Pie! The savoury pie section offers must-try recipes for Chicken Pot Pies, Spinach & Onion Quiche, Beef & Guinness Pie (perfect for St. Patrick’s Day) and more. Now you can have pie morning, noon, and night. The Book of Pie is beautiful and highly practical. You will turn to again and again all year long.
