Underrated ways to improve brain capacity

Life is a lot easier to manage when we’re operating at our highest level. Alas, that’s not always the level we find ourselves at. Sometimes, we’re not in as tip-top physical condition as we could be. At other times, our brain just seems to be a little sluggish, which makes it difficult to focus and deliver our best.

However, it’s important to remember that there are always things that you can do to help yourself. To improve your physical condition, you can eat better and begin exercising, and to improve your mental clarity, you can do one (or all!) of the things that we outline below.

Playing Games

Are you looking for a way to boost your brainpower while also having fun? Then look into playing games. While not all games will increase your mental capacity, some, especially classic games, can do just that. If you play online bingo, challenge a friend (or a computer) to chess, or spend an evening playing Scrabble, you’ll be improving your memory and cognitive thinking ability. Some video games, such as Starcraft, Call of Duty, and Portal, have also been shown to help with brain function too.

Eat Dark Chocolate

Looking for a tasty way to push your mind in the right direction? Then we have just the thing for you. Dark chocolate is something of a miracle ingredient when it comes to improving the mind. It does everything. Not only does it help to boost mood, but it also improves blood flow to the brain, helps to neutralize free radical damage, and assists with focus, memory, and learning. That’s a whole lot of goodness wrapped in one delicious little snack. We should emphasize the “little snack” part, however — dark chocolate is great for your mind, but it also contains the same number of calories as regular chocolate, so it’s best not to eat too much.

Learn a Foreign Language

Learning a foreign language is valuable in and of itself. There’s something highly pleasing about visiting another country and communicating with the locals in their own tongue. But there are brain benefits to learning a foreign language, too. In recent years, many studies have proven what anyone who has learned a foreign language already knows: it helps the brain. It can help improve focus and concentration, make it easier to study, and even give you an extra dose of discipline. Under MRI conditions, researchers found that it activates previously dormant parts of the brain, too.

Start Meditating

In our view, everyone should take up meditation. It can bring so much to your life, and all it asks in return is about ten minutes of your day each day. Once you’ve made it part of your everyday routine, you’ll find that you’re happier, more relaxed, and better able to handle the stresses and strains of life. And the brain benefits? With just a couple of months of meditation, you will have more discipline and focus and have reduced symptoms of things that can compromise mental performance, such as anxiety and depression. Meditation has also been shown to keep the brain healthy as we age, too.

Dance Around

You don’t need to have an excuse to spend a night dancing away on the dancefloor. But if you did want one, then here it is: in doing so, you’ll be helping to improve some key mental functions. For example, studies have shown that dancing can improve motor control, hand-eye coordination, and even some cognitive skills. On a long-term basis, it can reduce the risk of developing dementia. So, the next time your friend doesn’t want to hit the town for a night of dancing, just remind them: it’s good for their brain.
