Window Wonderland is a magical art show in The Junction featuring 10 Toronto artists

The Junction neighbourhood in the Dundas and Keele vicinity has come up with a really cool way to get people in to the spirit of the season. They have created a storefront ‘outdoor art gallery’ so to speak. This first annual ‘Window Wonderland’ features augmented reality to bring the works of art to life. It lifts the collective spirits of local passers-by as well as visitors to the area, famous for its galleries, restaurants and breweries.

On display until January 31, 2021, Window Wonderland features 10 exhibits, designed by 10 different local artists in partnership with 10 animators.

“It’s a fantastic initiative that is COVID safe and family friendly. It allows the entire community to come out and enjoy an outdoor gallery,” said Jasmine Pannu, one of the featured artists in an interview with CBC.

Essentially, the idea is that you download an app called Augle, hold up your phone to the artwork and then it comes to life. You will see multiple parts moving in the mural. Pannu says in hers you will see an owl fly back behind the castle, a train go up the mountain and you will see some twinkling stars.

Not only will the artwork come to life in animation but it will also feature audio.

“Window Wonderland is the first art exhibition of its kind in Toronto, Carol Jolly, executive director of the The Junction BIA, told the CBC. “We’re excited to be having it. You probably know The Junction is an art-centric neighbourhood. We’ve had to think a little bit outside of the box and came up with this idea that has already been underway in the City of Calgary,” said Jolly.

Visitors can check out the 1st Annual Window Wonderland in The Junction starting this Saturday and running until January 31, 2020.
