Beertown Public House is celebrating Valentine’s Day all month long with what they suggest is the perfect beer for Valentine’s Day. This Belgian sour red is tickling the taste buds of beer lovers this February!
Known as the ‘Duchess of Burgundy,’ Duchesse de Bourgogne is a Flanders Red Ale, which is renowned for its tart cherry, dark fruit, gentle oak and subtle balsamic notes. Brewed by Brouwerij Verhaeghe in West Flanders, Belgium, portions of the beer are aged for up to 18 months in large oak Foeders, and then are artfully blended, resulting in a complex, food-friendly beer that is meant to be sipped slowly, savoured with every meal, and enjoyed in moderation.

“Duchesse de Bourgogne is the perfect beer for Valentine’s month,” says John MacKay, President of Beertown Public House. “It embodies are philosophy of ‘Drink Better, Drink Less.’ This is a beer to be savoured, reflecting on the time, love and attention devoted to making it, rather than being consumed quickly.”
The beer was named in honour of Mary, Duchess of Burgundy, who ruled from 1477 until her tragic death following a riding accident in 1483. Legend holds that Mary received the first recorded diamond engagement ring – a symbol of love and devotion that mirrors the care, craftmanship and artistry required to make every batch of Duchesse de Bourgogne. Its elegance and layered flavours make it well-suited to Valentine’s dinners, special occasions or simply enjoying with someone close.
Pouring Duchesse de Bourgogne at Beertown showcases the tradition and craftsmanship of Brouwerij Verhaeghe. Long-tenured team members of the Charcoal Group of Restaurants experienced this first-hand during an annual trip sponsored by McClelland Premium Imports, where they sampled the beer on-site. It was during this trip that the restaurant group asked the brewery to important Duchesse de Bourgogne to Canada, with the commitment that it would be featured on their restaurant menus and supported nationally. As a result, Beertown Public House became the first restaurant in Canada to import and pour it.
At Beertown, Duchesse de Bourgogne pairs with special entrées, such as grilled AAA striploin steak or Cajun-spiced blackened chicken – and complements desserts like bumbleberry and white chocolate New York cheesecake.
“Whether for a quiet dinner or special occasion, Duchesse de Bourgogne encourages guests to slow down and savour each sip,” says MacKay. “With its distinctive and complex flavour profile, it’s a beer that feels truly special. One meant to be appreciated with the same care and intention as the moments and people you’re sharing it with.”
Often referred to as the ‘Burgundy of Belgium’ for its pronounced wine-like characteristics, Duchesse de Bourgogne has an ABV of 6.2% and an IBU of 12, both higher than the average glass of beer. As a result, Beertown Public House pours it in an iconic stemmed tulip glass in a smaller, wine-like portion – encouraging guests to enjoy the beer thoughtfully while highlighting its presentation and complexity.
At Beertown, it is available from February 3 through March 1, only while supplies last.
