Canadians Will Never Expect What This New $2 Coin Does at Night

What if a coin could make one of Canada’s most iconic landmarks come alive at night in your hand? That’s exactly what the Royal Canadian Mint has done to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the CN Tower. Unveiled today at the Tower’s Main Observation Level, the new $2 circulation coin features a glow-in-the-dark effect—only the second Canadian coin ever to use this dazzling technology. Canadians can now carry a tiny piece of this legendary landmark wherever they go.

Fifty years ago, Toronto’s skyline was growing fast, and engineers faced a challenge: how to improve radio and TV transmission while creating a symbol that would define a nation. What emerged was the CN Tower, an engineering marvel that has since captured the hearts of millions. Today, it stands not just as a feat of construction but as a beacon of Canadian pride, ingenuity, and ambition.

The commemorative coin, designed by Canadian illustrator Carl Wiens, depicts the Tower rising above Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline. The inner core contrasts the 1976 skyline with today’s cityscape, while glow-in-the-dark details illuminate the Tower and skyline at night—bringing the coin to life in a way few Canadians have ever seen. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, crafted by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

“For half a century, the CN Tower has stood as a world-renowned landmark,” said the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue. “This new coin gives Canadians a chance to carry a piece of that history with them.”

Stéphan Déry, President and CEO of Canada Lands Company, added: “The CN Tower is an enduring symbol of Canadian pride, engineering excellence, and innovation. As we celebrate its 50th anniversary, we honour its legacy and a future of infinite possibilities.”

Royal Canadian Mint just released a new two-dollar circulation coin celebrating the 50th anniversary of the CN Tower at the CN Tower’s Main Observation Level on March 31, 2026.

A Canadian Engineering Marvel

Built in the 1960s to solve broadcast challenges, the CN Tower rose to a world-record setting 553.33 metres thanks to the efforts of over 1,500 workers operating around the clock. Their determination and collaboration produced not only a telecommunications tower but a landmark celebrated around the globe.

Limited to a mintage of three million, the new $2 coin includes one million uncoloured versions and two million colourized coins. Both versions will begin circulating March 31, 2026, and Canadians will find them in change as banks and businesses replenish $2 coins.

Collectors can also access Keepsake Cards, Special Wrap Rolls, and exclusive silver and gold coins that enhance the glow-in-the-dark experience, making this a must-have for anyone who loves Canadian history or numismatics.

With this coin, the CN Tower continues to spark wonder, reminding Canadians of five decades of ambition, innovation, and a skyline that reaches for the stars—and now, a coin that literally lights up the imagination.
