Six Bases—A New Way to Make Healthy Eating a Cinch
Canadian husband and wife cookbook writing team Josie Boulding and Ryan Stuart have come up with a new way to make healthy eating easier than imaginable. It starts with six bases which serve as the building blocks to create simple, healthy and delicious meals as outlined in their new cookbook called HABIT: 6 Bases, 29 Recipes and a New Way of Cooking.
First, you make one of the base recipes, choosing from Salsa Verde, Teriyaki, Miso, Caesar Base, Lemon Preserve or Cashew Cream. These nutritious sauces are great on their own for adding flavour-packed deliciousness to chicken, stir-fries, soups and more, but then you can use them as a base to create meals with ease. This is a bonus for busy families who need to get a healthy dinner on the table before soccer or hockey practice. The base is already ready—just add a few ingredients to make a meal in no time.

The chapters are named after each base recipe which include the base recipe as well as a few recipes using the sauce. The base recipe makes enough sauce to create two or three different recipes. For instance, the Salsa Verde Base can be used to make salad dressing, risotto, pesto, quiche and more. The Teriyaki Base recipe can be used to make Stir-Fry Teriyaki, Teriyaki-Glazed Salmon or Teriyaki Mushroom Tacos. The Lemon Preserve base not only looks delicious, but this versatile base can be used to make everything from a Tequila Sour to Roasted Veggie and Pecan Salad.

Josie Boulding, from Comox, B.C. is the creator of Restless Josie Cooks (@restlessjosie). She grew up at Strathcona Park Lodge, a resort on Vancouver Island owned and operated by her parents. As a child, Josie suffered from her first food allergy and about 15 years ago she joined her siblings in their gluten-free lifestyle.
Josie worked as a professional photographer and produced and hosted Restless Josie, a travel and lifestyle TV show which aired on Sportsnet and CHEK TV. The couple met at Strathcona Park Lodge when Ryan came to the resort to teach outdoor education. They quickly discovered their mutual love of food and outdoor adventure. This is the couple’s first cookbook.

Every west coast-inspired recipe is gluten-free, low in sugar, and light on dairy
Every recipe in HABIT is gluten-free, low in sugar, light on dairy and “West Coast Inspired”. There are a few ingredients that some readers may not be all that familiar with, so that’s where the chapter on Ingredients and Substitutions comes in handy. Most of the ingredients can be found in larger supermarkets or on Amazon.
The authors have also included afew dessert recipes. The Cashew Cream base is the starting point to make Shrimp Salad and Creamy Pasta Sauce as well as desserts such as Raw Lemon “Cheesecake” with Raspberry Coulis and Chocolate Truffle Cake.
HABIT is an easy-to-follow cookbook that offers a unique approach to getting healthy meals on the table almost as quickly as you can say “kids, dinner is ready!”
