Esports coming to Toronto with exciting new stadium set to be built

The entire landscape of the gaming industry has been one of a steep incline, which has been seen in many areas around the world and this includes Canada. More and more investments are being made and producing these exciting platforms, that includes the likes of JackpotCity, which is one of the leading online casinos within Canada and it also continues to see growth with a large number of mobile and PC players. But it is not just this area of the gaming industry that has been behind this vast growth and more traditional forms have also been seeing great success, which has also led to this remarkable rise for the Esports scene world-wide. Esports was worth $733 million in 2017 and is now predicted to reach $1.9 billion by next year, which further shows the meteoric rise that it is going through and it is now coming to Toronto.

Yes, you heard that correct, with Architecture studio Populous, who have recently unveiled the visuals behind this stunning multi-purpose arena that is being built in the city. This will be used for not only Esports but also plays and music concerts. The stadium itself will be located in the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) Grounds, which will be a 7,000 seated stadium and is due to be completed in 2025. This Toronto venue will put Canada on the map when it comes to Esports and will provide some spectacular events in the near future.

It is set to be one of the marquee stadiums for a host of different events with an incredible modern design. The Populous Senior Principal Jonathan Mallie also commented on this. He said, “The design of the theatre was neither conceived as a sports arena nor an opera house, rather, a new typology that straddles the two – a state-of-the-art performance venue,” He then added that, “The theatre architecture creates a merger of the old and the new.”

What is also special about this is that the developer also owns two of the leading Esports teams in Toronto, so this is likely to be a venue used by both in the future. The developer being OverActive Media, with the Toronto sides owned being Toronto Ultra of the Call of Duty league and Toronto Defiant of the Overwatch league.

Chris Overholt, who is the Media CEO of OverActive Media also commented on this recent exciting news. He said, “It has always been our intention to develop a venue and hosting strategy and to build a facility that could not only serve as an iconic home for our two franchises but ultimately emerge as a global hub for major international esports events. We are already in active discussions to attract some of the biggest esports events in the world. This venue will redefine Toronto’s event hosting opportunities in every way”. It shows just how exciting this is for the city on a whole and it is set to bring in large numbers of tourism. There are also huge expectations of the stadium, with Populous at the forefront of this, with their successful design of the incredible Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London most recently.
