Beyond Uhura

AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives is proud to present Beyond Uhura, a conversation about Star Trek, Afrofuturism and Representation, on February 26 at Jane Finch Mall in Toronto. Beyond Uhura honours the cultural legacy of Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura Nyota and Percy Rodrigues as Portmaster Stone, who in 1966 became the first Black characters in a science-fiction television series. Bringing these histories into the present, Beyond Uhura will feature visual artist Jamera DaCosta in conversation with Star Trek franchise actors Ronnie Rowe Jr. (Star Trek: Discovery) and Dorothy Atabong (Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy). Through dialogue, performance, and media, participants will explore Afrofuturism, fashion, identity, and the responsibility of representation to younger generations.

Beyond Uhura will also feature a special announcement about Sculptfleet, a sculpting workshop series held at Jane Finch Mall during March Break. Sculptfleet will be supported by Toronto’s very own Shauna Llewellyn, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s award-winning make up department head, and Vancouver’s Jeryce Dianingana, Black Panther’s video game digital sculptor.
