Kensington Market Jazz Festival Turns 10 This Weekend, Here’s What’s Happening

On September 20, 2025, the Kensington Market Jazz Festival (KMJF) marks a milestone moment: its 10th anniversary. Running from September 19–21, 2025, since its inception in 2016, the festival has become one of Toronto’s most beloved cultural events, bringing together world-class musicians, passionate audiences, and the vibrant spirit of Kensington Market. For a decade, KMJF has embodied the principle “Better, Not Bigger,” delivering intimate performances that celebrate jazz in its purest, most community-driven form.

Founded by acclaimed singer-songwriter and philanthropist Molly Johnson O.O.C., (with Genevieve Marentette, Ori Dagan, and community volunteers), KMJF was built on the vision of showcasing Toronto’s rich jazz culture while nurturing community connection. “I started KMJF to showcase the cultural tapestry of our market,” says Johnson. “Your support makes this celebration possible.” As a registered charity since 2021, the festival remains artist-driven, volunteer-powered, and deeply committed to Kensington Market’s legacy as a cultural hub.

This year’s lineup is one of the most exciting yet, featuring Canadian jazz luminary Jane Bunnett, Afro-Cuban piano master Hilario Durán, powerhouse vocalist Alana Bridgewater, and JUNO-winning reggae-jazz fusionist Jay Douglas. Festival favorite Alex Pangman will also bring her timeless swing to the stage, joined by special guest ensembles curated exclusively for this anniversary edition. Together, these artists reflect both the heritage and the future of jazz in Toronto.

When are the shows? Noon to 11 pm Sept. 19-21

The 10th anniversary festival runs September 19–21, 2025, with performances each day from 12:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Check the festival schedule here. More than 200 musicians will perform across multiple venues, offering audiences a chance to immerse themselves in 92 intimate shows throughout Kensington Market.

Concerts will take place in various beloved spaces throughout Kensington Market, from cozy cafés and community halls to open-air patios where audiences can experience headline sets, community programming, and surprise pop-up shows.

Ticket Information

Tickets are available for cash only at the door, ranging from $20 to $25.

Legacy Stage

To mark a decade of jazz excellence, KMJF will debut a “Legacy Stage,” featuring curated sets from artists who have been part of the festival since its beginning. Additionally, fans can expect surprise collaborations, anniversary-themed installations, and live painting all weekend long by Jared Olsever in the front patio of Supermarket!

“This festival began as a dream to bring jazz into the everyday lives of our community,” says Artistic Director Molly Johnson. “Ten years later, we are not only celebrating the music but also the friendships, partnerships, and cultural impact KMJF has fostered.” Genevieve Marentette adds: “Our 10th year is proof of what happens when artists, volunteers, and audiences come together with love for music and place.”

KMJF has contributed significantly to Toronto’s cultural and economic landscape. Beyond the more than 240 local businesses that thrive during festival weekend, the event has spurred artist development initiatives, seasonal series, and youth programming such as the KMJF Kids Music Series. These efforts have amplified the voices of local talent while strengthening Kensington Market’s identity as a hub of creativity.

The festival is cash only and purchased onsite. Full festival details can be found at https://www.kensingtonjazz.com. Audiences are encouraged to show up early to secure access to intimate venues with limited capacity. For updates, follow KMJF on Instagram and Facebook @kensingtonjazz.
