TORONTO, July 20, 2022 – As the city is already under a heat warning and coping with sweltering temperatures, now Environment and Climate Change Canada has just issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch this afternoon for most of southern Ontario and Tornado warnings for some regions north and southwest of the city.
For southern Ontario ECCC says, “Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail.”
ECCC also has issued a tornado watch for numerous regions to the north (cottage country) and southwest (Windsor to Waterloo) of Toronto. ECCC says that “Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes. Strong winds and large hail are also possible.”
Tornado warnings issued for:
Algonquin, Barrie-Orillia-Midland, Burk’s Falls – Bayfield Inlet, Dufferin-Innisfil, Grey-Bruce, Huron – Perth, London – Middlesex, Parry Sound – Muskoka, Sarnia – Lambton, Waterloo – Wellington, Windsor -Essex – Chatham – Kent
WATCH OUT FOR:
Canada’s trusted weather source says late this afternoon and into the evening, residents in the GTA could experience “Damaging wind gusts up to 100 km/h” as well as “Nickel size hail possible.”
These thunderstorms are expected to affect the area beginning late this afternoon. The main hazard will be damaging wind gusts. There is some uncertainty as to how far east the risk of severe weather will continue this evening.
Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
