Stratford Festival Mourns the Loss of Actor Michael Blake

TORONTO, July 21, 2025 — It is with deep sadness that the Stratford Festival family announces the passing of Toronto actor Michael Blake, a dear friend and much valued colleague of the festival.

“Mr. Blake was one of the most gifted actors of his generation. He played an extraordinary variety of parts and did so with an ability and ease that was rare,” reads the announcement from Stratford Festival.

A member of the Stratford Festival company for 10 seasons, he performed in 25 productions between 2011 and 2023, leaving an indelible mark on the Festival’s stages. Among his most celebrated performances were an unforgettable Othello, a heartbreaking Macduff in Macbeth, a delightfully villainous Don John in Much Ado About Nothing, and a commanding Cominius in Coriolanus. His portrayals were captured on film and will endure as a testament to his artistry.

“Each part Michael played was powerfully realized,” says Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino. “His work was true and realistic. His portrayals had an integrity that was compelling. It drew you into his reality.

Beyond Stratford, Mr. Blake’s career spanned theatres across Canada, and his work extended to film and television, where his presence brought nuance and quiet power to every role. His range and depth made him a sought-after performer not only for classical theatre, but also for contemporary works.

Born and raised in Toronto, Michael Blake maintained strong ties to the city throughout his life. He trained at Toronto’s George Brown Theatre School, where his talent and dedication to the craft quickly distinguished him. Early in his career, he performed with such companies as Soulpepper Theatre, Canadian Stage, and Factory Theatre, earning praise for his versatility and sensitivity as an actor. Toronto remained his creative home, a place where he mentored younger artists, participated in community workshops, and often returned to perform between seasons at Stratford.

His deep connection to the city and its arts community was mirrored in his personal life. Friends recall his warmth, generosity, and quiet wit. He was a passionate advocate for diversity in theatre, and a strong believer in making classical work accessible to all. His legacy in Toronto will live on not only in his performances but in the lives and careers of the many artists he inspired and supported.

“We will all remember him both for his art and his person. He was a member of our artistic family and he will be deeply missed. We send our condolences to Michael’s family and to his many friends and colleagues facing this difficult loss,” said Cimolino.

Funeral details have yet to be announced. The Stratford Festival will be dedicating a production in its 2026 season to honour Mr. Blake’s memory and immense contribution to the Canadian stage.
