Hailing from Toronto, Nelson Sobral is equally inspired by the vast, wide open spaces of the country he calls home and the labyrinthine maze of the city in which he resides. A singer-songwriter and guitarist, Sobral’s music is as much Americana and blues as it is soul and rock ’n roll, perfectly balanced with the energy and sound of each of his respective influences. His magical voice and guitar style channel soul, country, blues and rock into one transformative and cathartic late-night vision.
Nelson Sobral’s latest single is his soulful take on the Cyndi Lauper classic, “Time After Time”. Released on June 6th via Castlemore Records, this cover comes to life with Nelson’s distinct vocals, and the musical depth he is known for. Without taking anything away from the original, he has managed to pay homage to the song while modernizing it and making it his own.

““I play a lot of cover gigs—part of the job,” says Nelson. “Some songs I play straight. Others, I bend until they feel like they came outta me. Cyndi Lauper’s classic “Time After Time” is one of those. It started out as just another tune in the set. But night after night, it kept landing differently. Somewhere along the way, it stopped feeling like a cover and started feeling like mine—like something I might’ve written. I cut it at home—played all the instruments, sang it the way I felt it.”
For “Time After Time”, Nelson once again enlisted the help of friend and fellow musician Mattie Leon, who added piano, vocal harmonies, and also mixed the track. Mastering was done by Reuben Ghose of Mojito Mastering.
As “Time After Time” is a well known and much loved classic, Nelson saw no need to change the song completely or stray too far from the original. “This isn’t about reinventing anything,” he says. “It’s about taking an already powerful song and saying it in my own voice.”
“Time After Time” by Nelson Sobral is now streaming everywhere.
