Alison Roman is the New York Times bestselling author of Nothing Fancy and Dining In who has now written her first baking book, Sweet Enough. From the first recipe, I was hooked! As someone who receives dozens of books to review, I donate many of them after I’ve reviewed them. Sweet Enough, like Alison Roman’s other books, are books that I will cherish and save for my personal cookbook collection.

Alison was a restaurant pastry chef who used her mega skills to create show stopping desserts for her latest book. And although they may look difficult to make, the recipes are geared to people who don’t have fancy kitchen equipment and who want recipes they can make using just a few mixing bowls. Some of the must-try recipes include Simple Fruit Tart, Blueberry Cornmeal Shortbread Tart, Tiny Strawberry Galettes (hand pies), Deep-Dish Apple Galettes, Bonnie’s Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, Banana Split Ice Cream Cake and more. She even includes a few of her favourite recipes she’s been using for years, including Raspberry Ricotta Cake (she says it’s the cake that started it all-her love affair with simple one-bowl cakes) and Better Banana Bread.

Chapters include Pies, Tarts, Galettes; Cakes; Things Called Puddings, Cookies; Frozen Things; I’ve Got All This Fruit, Now What? Morning Times, Snack Times; Staples and Extras. There’s one piece of important advice that Alison Roman shares to make readers better bakers and that is “Read a recipe from start to finish before making it.” In other words, read first, then bake. Do your homework to ensure you have everything you need on hand before the fun part begins.

With over 100 gorgeous photos and more than 85 intentionally simple recipes, this book will soon become your go-to cookbook for making desserts. Sweet Enough—oh how sweet it is! It’s a must-have cookbook for every baker and dessert lover!
