Extreme Cold Warning issued for southern Ontario

TORONTO, January 21, 2025 – An Extreme Cold Warning for Toronto and southern Ontario has been issued by environment and Climate Change Canada. Extreme cold temperatures are expected across the province tonight and into Wednesday morning. With the wind chill values could reach minus 30 to minus 35 according to ECCC.

The bone chilling cold, which could hit as low as -19c tonight, is the result of an Arctic airmass which is expected to moderate Wednesday afternoon.

Of course it goes without saying that these sort of temperatures put people and pets at risk.

Frostbite is also a growing concern with these sort of temperatures. Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Dress for the cold

Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Check in on family friends and neighbours

Check on older family, friends and neighbours. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm.
