On June 23, the heart of downtown will once again transform into a sea of red, gold, and green as members of Toronto’s vibrant Ghanaian community gather to cheer on the Black Stars as they take on England’s Three Lions at Boston Stadium.
Hosted by Tribe Culture Fest, the free public watch party promises an electric atmosphere, bringing together football fans, families, and supporters from across the GTA. The match will be broadcast live on a massive screen in the Square, while a live DJ will keep the energy high before and after kickoff.
The event comes on the heels of Ghana’s dramatic win over Panama, which sent jubilant fans into the streets around Sankofa Square in celebration and showcased the passion of Toronto’s Ghanaian diaspora during this year’s World Cup.
Today’s gathering is also part of #HotSquareSummer, a season-long program transforming Sankofa Square into one of the city’s busiest cultural hubs. Running through late August, the initiative features a diverse lineup of free weekly events including live music, outdoor movies, fitness classes, food experiences, markets, and cultural celebrations.
Highlights include Tuesday lunchtime DJ sessions and food trucks, monthly outdoor movie nights featuring Canadian films, Wednesday wellness and fitness programming, Thursday evening concerts spotlighting Toronto talent, and select Friday editions of the Melanin Market, celebrating Black entrepreneurship, art, fashion, and culture.
Whether you’re cheering for Ghana, England, or simply looking to soak up the World Cup atmosphere, today’s watch party offers a chance to experience the energy of international football and the strength of Toronto’s diverse communities in one of the city’s most iconic public spaces.
