TORONTO, June 3, 2022 – As the impressive and grand celbrations are taking place across the pond in London, Commonwealth countries are all marking the Her Majesty Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in their own way. The City of Toronto will be commemorating the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen’s Elizabeth II with several activities from June 2 to June 5 to mark this historic milestone celebrating 70 years since she acceded to the throne.
On June 2, in celebration of the date of Her Majesty’s coronation and to coincide with the culmination of events taking place in central London and across the Commonwealth, the City will:
- Raise the Canadian Platinum Jubilee Flag at Nathan Phillips Square.
- Illuminate the Toronto sign purple to coordinate with activities on Parliament Hill and in other capital cities across Canada and the Commonwealth joining in on the Jubilee Illumination Initiative.
- Illuminate the CNE Princes’ Gates at Exhibition Place to honour the United Kingdom’s long tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees through the lighting of community beacons.
- The City of Toronto Archives online exhibit “Queen City: Her Majesty in Toronto” continues and has been updated for the Platinum Jubilee.
On June 5, there will be a special tree planting ceremony supporting the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy initiative. Mayor John Tory and Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell will deliver remarks at the ceremony, followed by a ceremonial tree planting and unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the occasion.
