Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mayor John Tory congratulate Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario

OTTAWA, ON, June 3, 2022 – Doug Ford and his Progressive Conservative Party have one with majority for the second straight Ontario provincial election, securing 83 seats.

During his acceptance speech at the Toronto Congress Centre the newly re-elected leader said, “Tonight’s victory, it isn’t about me, it isn’t about the party,” Ford told the crowd about an hour after the results poured in. “This victory belongs to every worker who knows that they deserve better. Every family knows that they can dream bigger.”

The PC party took 83 votes while the NDP finished second with 31, followed by the Liberal party with 8 seats. The Green Party’s Mike Schreiner was elected in his riding of Guelph but once again that was the only seat they won in this election.

Following the results both the longtime New Democratic Party leader Andrea Horwath, and Liberal party leader Steven Del Duca stepped down as party leaders. Although the NDP was once again elected the official opposition party, in her acceptance speech at the Hamilton Convention Centre, fighting back tears, the leader of Ontario’s NDP for 13 years said, “My commitment to you is never going to waver, and I’m going to keep working to earn your confidence each and every day. I’m going to keep doing that. But tonight, it’s time for me to pass the torch, to pass the baton, to hand off the leadership of the NDP.”

I’m not shedding tears of sadness. I’m shedding tears of pride. Look at you. Look at all of you. Look at what we have done together,” said Horwath.

Meanwhile in Vaughan last night, Liberal leader Steven Del Duca who had been at the helm since 2020, also stepped down after losing his seat in his own riding of Vaughan-Woodbridge to incumbent PC candidate, Michael Tibollo.

“I have no doubt that the women and men we have elected will do their part, more than their part to grow a new progressive movement in this province,” he said. “It will however, be a movement that will be led by a new leader – earlier this evening I informed our party president of my intention to step down.”

Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the results of the provincial election in Ontario:

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario on their re-election.

“Over the past several years, the federal government, working with the province, has delivered historic investments in retooling our auto sector to build cleaner vehicles while creating and securing thousands of good jobs in communities across the province.

“I look forward to continue working with Premier Ford and his government to keep people safe from COVID-19, build the housing that communities need, and deliver on our federal promise of $10-a-day child care for families while growing the middle class and the economy.

“We will build a better future for Ontarians, and all Canadians.”

Toronto’s Mayor John Tory also congratulated Premier Ford. “We have forged a strong intergovernmental partnership during the COVID-19 pandemic and I will work to ensure that continues so that the Toronto economy and the Ontario economy – come back together stronger than ever,” said Tory.

“Before the election and during the campaign, the Premier and his government pledged to work with the Government of Canada to provide the City (Toronto) with relieg funding to cover its remaining $875 million in 2022 COVID-19 budget impacts, principally the result of TTC revenue shortfalls and extraordinary shelter costs,” said Tory.

Toronto’s mayor also pointed out the the City relies on continued support from all levels of governmnet. “Continued co-operation between City, Provincial and Federal governments is crucial. The key issues of our time including housing and mental health simply cannot be effectively addressed by the City of Toronto alone,” said Tory.
