New Spotlight Sketch Comedy Series coming to The Second City Monthly

September Spotlight Will Feature Potato Potato and Small Friend Tall Friend

Spotlight at The Second City is a new series, hosted and produced by Taylor Hreljac and Gabe Meacher, that presents sketch comedy’s best troupes in their best light. To kick off this monthly series, Spotlight at The Second City will feature award-winning comedy troupes Potato Potato and Small Friend Tall Friend on September 2-3, 2025, at The Second City’s Theatre ‘73.

Each month Spotlight at The Second City will feature two celebrated troupes performing polished 30-minute sets for a two-show run. The Second City Toronto will open its doors to the next generation of sketch for audiences to enjoy a double-header sketch show: two acts, one amazing night of fresh comedy.

It is a rare opportunity for sketch troupes to perform their feature-length shows more than once outside of the festival circuit,” said Taylor Hreljac and Gabe Meacher“We partnered with The Second City to create this monthly show where established and emerging sketch troupes, that the whole scene is excited about, can show their best stuff to industry and audiences on a professional stage.”

Part political satire, part sketch show, and with a generous dose of dread: Potato Potato @ Second City is a brand new show written and created by Ashlyn Kusch, Daniel Bagg, Lizzie Song, Callan Forrester, Rami Khan and Erika Rogstad. With Canadian politics popping off and the climate crisis at its peak, Potato Potato will continue to draw from their theatre and musical backgrounds to explore topics that weigh heavy on the minds of Canadians, like the housing crisis or if the Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau date means anything? This show is all about what it’s like to live in today’s world. But hey, it’s not that bad…right?

Small Friend Tall Friend brings sketches and songs that are all about pop culture, identity politics, and being in your 20s. Tackling essential topics like being attracted to Nosferatu, failing diversity training at work, and even being gay. They hope to make you laugh… and contemplate. Small Friend Tall Friend, featuring Becky Ablack, Zoe Marin, David Civcic, and Stephanie Perri, have performed at the Comedy Is Art Festival, Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival, Montreal SketchFest, Toronto Fringe, and were named Critics’ Pick at Hamilton Fringe.

Taylor Hreljac and Gabe Meacher are collaborators and producers who co-run Toronto Sketch Comedy, a grassroots hub for live sketch in the city. They are a steady presence in Toronto’s comedy scene, creating space for emerging performers and championing original work. You may have seen their writing and performances at Just For Laughs, Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival and NYC Sketchfest. Their work blends character-driven comedy with a deep commitment to building community and keeping live comedy thriving.
