Severe Thunderstorm and Heavy Rainfall Warning issued for GTA

TORONTO, 9:35 AM July 16, 2024 – As the skies have opened up this morning and some Torontonians are considering building an ark, it comes as no surprise that Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued warnings for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in the GTA this morning into the afternoon.

ECCC says we can expect rainfall amounts up to 75 mm at a high rate of 40 mm an hour causing flooding risks through this morning, and now they are saying into the afternoon. Hopefully those with sump pumps have them in good working order, but some of those without sumps could find themselves with wet basements today.

How much rain is Toronto getting?

Total rainfall amounts of up to 125 mm are possible with rainfall rates of 40 mm within an hour. As mentioned, these heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads, so be extremly catuious out on the roads thsi morning.

Flooding

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible, reads the special weather statement. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
