These Two Crazy-Good Cookie Books Will Ruin Your Diet

There’s nothing as wonderful as freshly baked cookies hot from the oven. We know it’s hard to wait, but let the cookies sit on the tray to cool for a few minutes (to firm up) and then slide them onto wire racks to finish cooling. Once they are cool enough to lift off the tray in one piece, enjoy a fresh cookie with a big glass of cold milk. Cookie heaven!

We found two new cookie books that will inspire you to have cookies on hand anytime the “Cookie Monster” craving hits! If you love cookies and have some “Cookie Monsters” in your house, run, don’t walk, to pick up a copy of the new Zoë Bakes Cookies: Everything You Need to Know to Make Your Favorite Cookies and Bars by Zoë François and Cookies: The Best Recipes for the Perfect Anytime Treat by Vaughn Vreeland and The New York Times Cooking cookbook. Available at local bookshops.

Zoë Bakes Cookies: Everything You Need to Know to Make Your Favorite Cookies and Bars by Zoë François is a New York Times bestselling cookbook that was selected as one of the Amazon Best Books of 2024. It’s easy to understand why this book is so popular.

Zoë is the New York Times Bestselling author of ten cookbooks, including Zoë Bakes Cakes.  She’s also the co-author of the best-selling Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day series and host of the Emmy-nominated TV show Zoë Bakes on the Magnolia Network. In her new book the expert baker/professional pastry chef takes readers through her life with 75 cookies and bars from her Vermont roots to her Midwestern life. She studied at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in New York and has been a pastry chef at several restaurants in the U.S. and taught baking and pastry nationally, along with being the author of Zoë Bakes Substack Newsletter.

This gorgeous and hefty hardcover is filled with fabulous recipes, equally fabulous colour photos and sprinkled with love, character and personality. Zoë says she got hooked on cookie making as a child and says her book is a collection of delicious cookies that’s also an ode to her ancestors—her grandmothers and great-grandmothers whose baking skills became a part of her and her cookie DNA.

Cookie chapters are as follows: Healthy Cookies and Treats—The Vermont Commune, Holiday Cookies—Granny Neal’s Christmas Cookie Tin, Jewish Favorites—Bubbe Berkowitz’s Cookies, Worldly Cookies—My Home-Ec Cookie Evolution, Chocolate Chip Obsession—Zoë’s Cookie Cart and Midwestern Cookies and Bars—State Fair and Other Favorites.

Beginning with her ‘hippie days’ in Vermont, you will find ‘healthy’ recipes for Coconut Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Morning Cookies and Ultra-Peanut Butter Cookies. Then step into her Granny’s kitchens and find adapted recipes for treats like Lemon Lavender Shortbread, Rugelach, Almond Macaroons and Black and White Cookies. Skip ahead to discover Zoë’s Chocolate Chip Obsession to find recipes for Zoë’s Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies, Triple Chocolate Chunk Cookies and “Anything Goes Brownies.”

What I like about this book (aside from the amazing recipes) is that the author has included an extensive volume of cookie-baking expertise to guide readers through the process to achieve success time after time. Readers will also learn details about perfecting chocolate chip cookies with the Chocolate Chip Cookie Lab. You will want to make every recipe in this gorgeous book!

What I love most about this book is the “Table of Cookies” at the front of the book which features full colour photos of the 100 cookie favourites with the chapter and page numbers for easy reference. It inspires you to get baking!

Some recipes are showy and may prove more time consuming such as Neapolitan Checkerboards or Spiced Chocolate Marble Shortbread (but well worth the effort), others are simple classics that you will turn to time after time (such as Classic Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, Holiday Rocky Roads, Coconut Macaroons and the giant-sized Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookies.
