City of Toronto sets date for Ward 15, Don Valley West by-election

Toronto City Clerk John D. Elvidge has announced the following dates for the Ward 15, Don Valley West by-election:

  • Nominations will open Monday, July 22 at 8:30 a.m.
  • Nominations will close Thursday, September 19 at 2 p.m.
  • Advance voting will be available on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Election day will be held on Monday, November 4 with voting locations open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Ward 15 by-election is taking place to fill the vacant council seat formerly occupied by the late Councillor, Jaye Robinson for 14 years. Councillor Jaye Robinson, sadly passed away on May 16.

At its meeting on Wednesday, June 26, Toronto City Council declared the office of Councillor for Ward 15, Don Valley West vacant and opted to fill the vacancy by holding a by-election. The by-law authorizing this by-election will come into force on Sunday, July 21 at 11:59 p.m.

Vote in the Ward 15 by-election by mail

Electors will have the option to vote by mail in this by-election, with more details available in September.

Potential candidates are reminded that under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 (MEA), they cannot incur campaign expenses or accept campaign contributions until after filing nomination papers with the City Clerk. Information about the MEA can be found on the Ontario government’s website .

The timing of the by-election is determined by the City Clerk independently of Council. Under the MEA, the Clerk fixes nomination day (close of nominations) between 30 and 60 days after the passing of a by-law indicating a by-election is required. Election day occurs 45 days after nomination day.
