Siding sold in a showroom under warm lighting doesn’t tell you much about how it behaves at -25°C after the third freeze-thaw cycle of the week. Fiber cement is engineered specifically for durability against moisture and temperature cycling, and cement-based building products are commonly evaluated using freeze-thaw resistance testing (ASTM C666), a standard method for measuring how a material holds up under repeated freezing and thawing. It doesn’t warp or crack from cold the way wood or vinyl can. The tradeoff is weight and cost, and it requires properly sealed cut edges during installation an exposed edge that absorbs moisture can still be vulnerable once that moisture freezes.
Engineered Wood Siding
Engineered wood products are designed to resist the swelling and warping that affects solid wood, but they depend heavily on an intact factory-applied sealant. Where that seal is compromised often at cut edges or fastener points moisture can get in, freeze, and expand the damage over successive winters.

Solid Wood Siding
Wood offers a classic look but takes the most consistent maintenance in a freeze-thaw climate. Without regular sealing and repainting, wood absorbs moisture during thaws, which then freezes and expands within the grain, accelerating cracking and rot compared to any of the manufactured alternatives.
