Toronto streets get a splash of art: Two local students have their artwork featured on snow plows and win a $500 prize

Toronto, March 11 – Artwork from two Toronto students is set to add some colour to city streetscapes as Snow T.O. announces the winners of its first-ever Paint the Plow contest, aimed at showcasing the work of emerging student artists across Toronto. After careful deliberation, two outstanding entries from Grade 7 students, Kayla N. and Zoha K. were selected from more than 100 submissions.

Paint the Plow Contest

As Toronto’s provider of winter maintenance services, Snow T.O. launched the Paint the Plow contest to inspire Toronto students during the winter months, offering them a creative outlet and the chance to have their artwork displayed across the city on a Snow T.O. snow plow. The two winners will each receive a prize of $500 in addition to having their vibrant artwork showcased on an actual Snow T.O. snow plow.

How the winners are chosen

Submissions were carefully evaluated based on creativity, artistic skill, and their unique interpretation of Toronto’s winter snow plow services, encouraging participants to unleash their imagination and showcase their talent. The winning artwork was unveiled on the Snow T.O. snow plows earlier this week during a special photoshoot, with photos and video at the link here.

Both Kayla and Zoha were inspired by imagining Toronto as a winter wonderland but each brought a distinct perspective to the contest. Kayla’s artwork pays homage to iconic Toronto landmarks, reimagined in a vibrant winter setting.

“I tried to put all of the stuff that you can see in Toronto, like the CN tower, the Rogers Centre, City Hall and the ice rink,” said Kayla, adding that even in the winter, Toronto can be colourful and inviting to residents and visitors.

Zoha K, 12 is a winner of the inaugural SNOW T.). Paint the Plow Contest 2024

Zoha’s submission focuses on the critical role of snow removal in city accessibility during the winter months. “It’s a little hard to play in the snow. But the snow plow moves the snow and that brings joy to the winter. You can’t play without it,” said Zoha.

6 runners-up

In addition to the two winners, six talented runners-up were selected for their exceptional creativity. The runners-up will each receive a prize of $250 and have their work featured on Snow T.O.’s Instagram channel.

“Snow T.O. was amazed by the level of talent and creativity displayed by all participants in the Paint the Plow contest. We are thrilled to celebrate the winners and runners-up whose artwork will bring colour to the community throughout the winter season,” said Jonathan Matson of Snow T.O.

Snow T.O. extends its heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and runners-up of the Paint the Plow contest and thanks everyone who participated and contributed to making this project a success.
