A portion of College Street will be closed for up to eight weeks for sinkhole repairs

TORONTO, ON., April 1, 2021 – The City of Toronto announced today that College Street, between McCaul Street and Huron Street, will be fully closed for up to eight weeks as crews perform emergency repairs to the sewer under the roadway.

On Friday evening, a brick sewer, which dates back to 1873, collapsed and created a void/sinkhole approximately 25 feet deep and up to 20 feet in circumference under College Street at Beverley St./St. George St. City crews and police responded immediately to close the roadway and make the area safe.

The repair is complex. In order to access the sewer to begin the work, crews first needed to remove the above ground TTC tracks and safely navigate a significant amount of underground infrastructure. Crews are working around-the-clock to repair the sewer and have the roadway reinstated as soon and as safely as possible.

Those planning essential travel near the area are asked to plan ahead and choose an alternate route. Please follow detour signs that are in place and be patient. Paid duty officers are in place at key locations to help direct traffic.

The following full closures are now in place to keep members of the public and crews in the work zone safe:

  • College Street between McCaul Street and Huron Street
  • Beverley Street at Cecil Street
  • St. George Street at approximately 30 metres north of College Street

TTC diversions are already in place for both eastbound and westbound service on 506 Carlton and 306 Carleton streetcars, as well as for 506B/306B Carlton replacement buses. Full details for these temporary service changes are available online .

Members of the public can use the Road Restrictions map to plan their essential trips on the City’s website.
