Who Is Joe? The Story Behind Toronto’s Newest Arts Space on Shaw Street

Joe’s Place for Creativity, powered by Prima Living, opens in Toronto.

TORONTO, October 20, 2026 – Prima Living, part of the Primacorp Ventures group, is proud to launch the grand opening of Joe’s Place for Creativity, a new accessible arts facility opening at 180 Shaw St. in Toronto’s Trinity-Bellwoods neighbourhood. The nearly 9,000-square-foot space, acquired by the National accessArts Centre (NaAC), Canada’s largest multidisciplinary disability arts organization, will give artists with disabilities a permanent home to learn, create and collaborate.

The story behind the name

The facility was made possible through a gift from Dr. Peter Chung, owner of Primacorp Ventures, and his wife Dr. Stephanie Chung, in memory of their late son, Joe Chung, who lived with autism and epilepsy. In recognition of that gift, the space carries the name Joe’s Place for Creativity powered by Prima Living. This marks the second major donation by the Chungs, who also contributed to a similar art space in Calgary to support accessible arts learning.

Why Prima Living got involved

“Prima Living is committed to improving quality of life for Canadians at every stage of life, not only the seniors we house today,” said Najib Raie, President of Prima Living. “A space where artists with disabilities can learn, create and be seen reflects the same values that shape our own communities: dignity, accessibility and a genuine investment in the people we serve. We are honoured to see the Prima Living name attached to a project with this much meaning.”

A new home for Workman Arts

Joe’s Place will also serve as the new home of Workman Arts, one of Toronto’s leading arts organizations working at the intersection of art and mental health, creating new opportunities for collaboration and artistic exchange across the city.

A broader philanthropic mission

The project reflects the broader philanthropic mission of Primacorp Ventures, which has contributed more than $150 million to scholarships and community initiatives across the education, healthcare and senior living sectors it operates in, including Prima Living. As Prima Living continues to grow its national footprint, the company remains committed to investing in the wellbeing of the communities connected to that growth.
