COVID-19: Ontario reports another single-day record case count

TORONTO, ON., Oct. 8, 2020 — Today, Ontario set another single-day record of confirmed COVID-19 cases, reporting 797 positive infections and completing a record 48,500 tests. The province also reported four deaths.

Ontario recorded its previous daily record-high case count on October 2 with 732, which eclipsed the province’s previous record of 700, also set recently on September 27. Yesterday, Ontario Publich Health Units recorded far fewer cases with 583, and on Tuesday the province recorded 548 cases.

The GTA accounted for 714 of the 797 new cases with 265 in Toronto, 182 in Ottawa, 134 in Peel 78 in York Region, 33 in Halton and 22 in Durham. Aside from Simcoe with 24 new cases, the rest of the provincial public health units reported 11 or fewer.

57% of today’s reported cases are in people under the age of 40.

Two of the four deaths reported today were long-term care home residents. and one death was a person aged 20-39 according to provincial data.

Regarding the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend, Ontario’s Minister of Health, Christine Elliott says, “This Thanksgiving, remember the safest way to celebrate is with those in your household and to gather with friends and family virtually. Please remember to continue to follow the public health measures that will help us to stop the spread.”
