TORONTO, July 15, 2022 — Gulfer are an explosive and agile quartet from Montreal, just release two singles before heading out on a tour that brings them to the Danforth Music Hall on July 22.

The contrast of “Greetings” and “Barely” succinctly represents the overarching spirit of Gulfer, now in their tenth year as a band whose proclivities range from rousing punkish anthems to technical and exploratory indie rock.

In its opening seconds, “Greetings” boasts inventive drumming and playfully intricate guitar to set the scene for a song that attempts to unpack the abundant contradictions and debaucheries that comprised our youth. There’s a hint of personal introspection in the lyrics, but singer/guitarist Vincent Ford avoids explicit resolution in favour of open-ended narration.

On “Barely” the band’s impressionistic side emerges with an upbeat, pithy composition bookended by droning atmospherics. Exploring the transactional nature of so many of our relationships, singer/guitarist Joe Therriault uses “Barely” to speak on attempts at reciprocity of kindness that ultimately fall short in our over-transactionalized world.

Gulfer’s ongwriters Vincent Ford and Joe Therriault drive the band’s honest and vulnerable lyricism, sung in punkish, emo slants and backed with dexterous, technically proficient guitar playing. On their self-titled third record, released in 2020, the two shared the writing process in tackling themes of human nature, complex relationships, climate change, and the waning of youth. The group’s rhythm section, comprised of bassist David Mitchell and drummer Julien Daoust, sustains Gulfer’s signature explosiveness and bolsters the band’s nimble, intricate style.

Gulfer’s collective influences range from grunge to shoegaze, as well taking inspiration from indie rock-leaning emo contemporaries. Recommended if you like: Oso Oso, Joyce Manor, Algernon Cadwallader, melodic and inventive rock with technical flourishes.
