Here’s what’s open and closed on Family Day in Ontario 2022

It’s Family Day in Ontario on Monday, February 21, 2022 and although many stores and attractions may be open there are still some essential closures to keep in mind, like the LCBO, most grocery stores, most banks and city and regional services.

Also, it is important for Ontarians to keep in mind that Indoor social gathering capacity limits are currently limited to 50 people in, while for utdoor gatherings you can have up to 100 people. Also, cinemas, theatres and sporting venues are now open at 50% capacity. 

Family Day is not a Federal holiday, but most provinces have a holiday on Monday under various monikers. In Alberta, BC (for the first time), Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Ontario it is referred to as Family Day. In Manitoba it is called Louis Riel Day. In Nova Scotia, it is Nova Scotia Heritage Day and in Prince Edward Island, this Monday holiday is referred to as Islander Day.

With this in mind, here’s what’s closed and what’s open in Toronto on this Family Day holiday Monday.

What will be closed on Family Day in Ontario?

  • Most major grocery stores
  • LCBO
  • The Beer Store
  • Most banks
  • All library services
  • City and regional services, including garbage collection

What will be open on Family Day in Ontario?

  • Most major malls, but some may offer reduced hours
  • Shopping Outlet Malls
  • Museums like the ROM, AGO, Casa Loma, Toronto Zoo, Ontario Science Centre and The Aga Khan Museum will have operational hours for Family Day
  • Some grocery stores, with the possibility of reduced hours
  • Federal government offices (Family Day is a provincial holiday)
  • Movie theatres
  • Most pharmacies, with the possibility of reduced hours
  • City Transit services ie. The TTC will operate on a holiday schedule on Family Day Monday and GO Transit will run with Saturday service.
