An hour ago at 3:13 pm on Saturday April 17, 2021 Ontario Premier Doug Ford tweeted that the province has reversed the decision to close playgrounds under the new restrictions announced yesterday. Ontario’s Premier took to twitter to say the new restrictions are to prevent large gatherings outdoors, but playgrounds now will remain open despite the initial order for them to close.

“Ontario’s enhanced restrictions were always intended to stop large gatherings where spread can happen,” tweeted Ford. “Our regulations will be amended to allow playgrounds but gatherings outside will still be enforced. Play outside safely. Parents keep your distance & wear masks if you can’t,” said Ford.

Under the new enhanced six-week stay-at-home order, effective at 12:01 am Monday, recreational activities including golf, basketball, soccer, outdoor playgrounds, tennis and camping were prohibited. Now that playgrounds have been removed from that list, there has been no official word on whether any other of the prohibited outdoor activities will now also be permitted. However, CBC has tweeted that the ban on outdoor gatherings will remain in place.
