Several vehicles box in suspected impaired driver in Markham

TORONTO, ON., June 11, 2020 — A suspected impaired driver was boxed in by several concerned citizens who had spotted her driving dangerously “all over the place” on Highway 7 last week.

York Regional Police say that they received a 911 call at around 7:35 p.m. on June 4 from a frightened citizen who was driving near Highway 7 and East Beaver Creek Road.

Police released audio and an accompanying video of a call from a worried driver who was screaming “Oh my God, she is about to hit a car. Oh my God she is about to hit a car” as the suspected impaired driver travelled westbound.

The caller then calms down a little, saying that the woman had finally stopped because several vehicles were blocking her progress. “She is not moving because everyone is trying to block her from driving,” the caller said.

The caller remained on the line and told police that the driver had said she had taken some mushrooms and cannabis gummies before driving.

Police arrived on the scene, told the caller “You don’t need to go see her right now, we are very close by, okay?” The officer thanked everyone for their help in what that called “a stressful situation” before taking the woman into custody.

Because the woman “was showing obvious signs of being impaired by drugs” when she was arrested, the police officers on scene decided to take her to hospital “out of concern for her level of intoxication.”

The driver was later released from hospital and CP24 says has “since been charged with impaired driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.”
