Severe thunderstorm warnings issued for GTA and cottage country

TORONTO, June 15, 2022 – This morning in addition to heat and humidity, severe thunderstorm warnings and watches have been issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada for most of the GTA and points north. Now, as of 10:15 am, the City of Toronto and all of Peel have just been placed under a severe thunderstorm watch.

ECCC warns that the thunderstorms this morning into the afternoon and evening could be accompanied by “Isolated hail up to nickel size” and “locally heavy downpours.”

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

As the humidex rises to the mid 30s to low 40s in the GTA on Thursday more severe thunderstorms could be on the horizon along with short periods of strong wind and heavy rain.

Cooler more seasonal temperatures will return on Friday and there may be more rain, but the weekend is expected to be bright and sunny across southern Ontario thanks to the incoming cold front.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm.
