Special Weather Statement issued for southern Ontario (Feb. 9/2023)

TORONTO, Feb. 9, 2023 – At 12:20 am Environment and Climate Changed has issued a Special weather statement for southern Ontario, with Heavy rainfall and strong winds expected in most areas, and freezing rain expected in regions starting from north Halton – Peel (Caledon, Halton Hills, Milton) and moving north.


In the Toronto area, starting Thursday morning until Thursday night, we can expect, rain, at times heavy. Total rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 mm combined with Southwesterly winds gusting 70 to 90 km/h. There is also a risk of freezing rain, particularly farther away from the lake.

Timing for the heavy rain

As mentioned, ECCC says, “Rain will begin Thursday morning. A brief period of freezing rain is possible Thursday morning for areas inland from Lake Ontario. Rain will taper to showers by Thursday evening. Strong southwesterly winds will develop Thursday afternoon and diminish Thursday night.”

High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. Isolated utility outages are possible.

Localized flooding may occur in areas of poor drainage.
