Special Weather Statement issued for Toronto – Rapid temperature drop and high winds

TORONTO, Feb. 27, 2024 – As if this winter couldn’t get any more bizarre in terms of weather. A Special Weather Statement has been issued for Toronto and southern Ontario. Environment and Climate Change Canada warns of a sharp cold front with strong winds causing a sudden temperature drop on Wednesday. So the province is in for a flash freeze Wednesday afternoon into the evening!

Temperatures are expected to swing as much as 20°C, in some areas dropping from 13°C in the morning to -7°C in the evening! As a result sudden icy conditions on roads and sidewalks can be expected.

The strong winds are expected to die down come Wednesday night, and Thursday morning will be a little milder at -2°C.

Hazards:

Northwesterly winds gusting 70 to 80 km/h. Sudden icy conditions on roads and walkways.

Timing:

Temperature drep commences Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Discussion:

A strong cold front is expected to track through southern Ontario on Wednesday causing temperatures to drop dramatically along with the development of strong northwesterly winds gusting to 70 or 80 km/h for much of the afternoon and evening. Winds are expected to ease Wednesday night. The sudden temperature drop may lead to icy surfaces as temperatures fall below the freezing mark through the day.
