TORONTO, May 16, 2023 – Summer is fast approaching (but the nice weather is finally here!) – and that means it’s time for a new season of art and activities under the Gardiner Expressway at The Bentway. That’s right, The Bentway’s summer season, titled Beyond Concrete, officially kicks off next Friday, May 26, with an evening launch party from 7:00-11:00 p.m., which is open to the public!

The evening will feature an energetic performance by Filipino artist Leeroy New’s The Aliens of Manila. The Aliens of Manila is a vibrant set of sculptural costumes made from up-cycled plastics sourced from local Toronto homes, restaurants, convention centres and nightclubs.

At first glance eye-catching and otherworldly, the Aliens’ appearance in Toronto invites the city to dive “beyond the concrete” and celebrate the launch of an exciting summer season of programming at The Bentway.

The Bentway’s Opening night activities include:

  • Up to 12 dancers choreographed by Toronto kiki house mother Danah Rosales, taking place at The Bentway Skate Trail surrounded by a series of new public art installations.
  • Ground-breaking Toronto-based DJs Karim Olen Ash, Sophie Jones, and Valeroo will spin uplifting and vibrant sets as guests dance and mingle with artists, designers, dancers, botanists, and other creatives.
  • Food trucks by The Arepa Republic, Mustache Burger, and 6 Spice Rack will be on site serving up delicious bites, including vegetarian and vegan options.

It’s sure to be an otherworldly experience. Public are welcome.
