Streaming services are back with a bang after a rough 2021. Giants like Netflix gave us some startling news. A loss of subscribers for the first time in a decade. It’s surprising since most households in America have shifted or are actively working towards gettings rid of their cable connections.

Globally the pattern is the same. Cable, as well as broadcast TV are losing ground against streaming services. This year has been a great start for streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney too. According to streaming trends in 2022, shows like Stranger Things broke multiple streaming records. Netflix also dominated the charts with the highest number of shows at number one for most streamed TV series and movies. Other streaming services weren’t all the behind either!

A surprising revelation has been the revival of the true crime genre. Though there have been great true crime shows over the years, their audience has been very niche. The streaming trends in 2022 showed a stark change. Netflix spent a significant amount of interest in developing true crime shows and it looks to of paid off. In Canada, we saw shows dominating popularity charts for multiple months as the fandom steadily grew. Who knows what to expect next year?!

3 True Crime Shows That Topped The Charts In Canada

What separates true crime from other crime shows is the reality factor. Most of the events that are shown in the series actually happened. Real people committed these very real crimes on actual people. Credit has to be given where credit is due, the fact that the cinematography and dramatization take these true crime shows towards realism rather than fiction.

Let’s check out the true crime shows that were loved by the audience this year!

Inventing Anna

Inventing Anna took the top spot of the most streamed TV shows for a whole three weeks after its release. The true crime drama follows the life of Anna Sorkin who cons her way into an elite lifestyle. Living the American drama, Anna’s real name is Anna Delvey as she ripped out money from the hands of the elite of New York and convinced everyone she was a German heiress.

Dahmer – The Monster

Dahmer – The Monster took everyone by surprise. Evan Peter’s performance as Jeffrey Dahmer – one of the most notorious serial killers of modern times made the show a great success. Peters has extensively talked about how mentally challenging the role of Dahmer has been for him. Channeling into the psyche of a serial killer who committed gruesome murders over a number of years cannot be easy.

The audience in particular has lauded the authentic storytelling and documentary-style narrative in the series. Many have even claimed that Peters made the serial killer almost ‘likable’, but let’s not forget that after all, Dahmer was a cold-blooded murderer!

The Tinder Swindler

Lastly, number three on the list of true crime shows we loved in 2022 is The Tinder Swindler. Not as gruesome as Dahmer, The Tinder Swindler is a documentary of a real-life con. The documentary follows the life of Simon Leviev – a man who conned women on Tinder out of their money. Ranging from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions, Simon lived an extravagant life until the women whom he conned caught up with him.

A successful 2022 after a lousy 2021 has put a spring in Netflix’s shoes. We can’t wait for what the new year has planned for us!
