Toronto under Heat warning with temp to feel like 39ºC, 40% risk of strong thunderstorms

TORONTO, ON., Aug. 23, 2020 — GTA reseidents can expect a hot, sticky and muggy Sunday into Monday. as today through to Monday evening, a heat warning has been issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) for the Toronto and Golden Horseshoe area. The warning says that daytime temperatures will reach 31ºC but the ECCC forecast is now saying it will hit 32ºC some with a humidex as high as 39ºC.

Canada’s trusted weather source says, “A very warm airmass is expected to affect the Golden Horseshoe today and Monday. Maximum daytime temperatures near 31 degrees Celsius with Humidex values near 38 or 39 are expected.”

Meanwhile, the Weather Channel is reporting a 40% risk of strong thunderstorms Sunday afternoon, particularly east of the city in the Kingston, Cornwall and Kawartha regions.

The evenings are expected to be 10 degrees cooler as minimum overnight low temperatures are expected near 20 degrees Celsius.

The heat warning will be short-lived however, as it is expected to end Monday night when a cooler airmass moves into the region.

ECCC also warns that the hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and cause the Air Quality Health Index to approach the high risk category. “The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors. Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
