Torontonians are flocking to get facelifts and liposuction during COVID

It’s not surprising that SkipTheDishes and Zoom are thriving during the COVID-19 lockdown. However, it’s a bit surprising that the plastic surgery industry like facelifts and liposuction is experiencing a mini-boom right now.

Plastic surgery clinics across Toronto and the rest of Canada have seen a steady influx of calls and appointments since the lockdown began in March of 2020. There are some estimates that point to plastic surgery appointments increasing by 30%, while inquires are up a whopping 300%.

This pandemic has given people a chance to zero in on their insecurities, and given them a unique opportunity to make the changes they’ve always wanted to make.

Recover from home

If you were to get a rhinoplasty procedure or a tummy tuck in the pre-COVID world, you may have had to book a week (or more) off of work to recover from surgery. But now people can have surgery and recover discreetly while working from home.

“When you’re not having to go into that water cooler convention every day, what a great time to do bodywork, because nobody’s looking at your figure,” said Dr. Stephen Mulholland, founder of The Toronto Plastic Surgeons clinic in Yorkville.

“Nobody’s judging, because you’re only being shown from the neck up.”

People can now get plastic or cosmetic surgery while working remotely, and save their vacation days for an actual vacation.

The Zoom Boom

Another major catalyst has been the emergence of daily meetings on Zoom, Slack, or Google Meetings. This has been dubbed The Zoom Boom or The Zoom Effect.

Most people don’t simply dislike these calls because they hate boring meetings. They hate seeing their own faces in the small window at the bottom of the screen.

It can be hard to find a flattering angle and good lighting in a home office. At the same time, people are starting to notice the emergence of things like bags under their eyes, or the dreaded double chin. This leads them to look into facial procedures like rhinoplasty, chin lifts, brow lifts, or total facelifts.

The Quarantine 15

Toronto’s gyms closing, plus a lot of stress eating, equals The Quarantine 15.

About 31% of surveyed Canadians said they have gained weight during the lockdown, with about 8.5% saying they have gained more than 5 pounds. That is not great, but it’s still better than the 40% of surveyed Americans that said they gained weight, with over 11% gaining more than 5 pounds.

These extra pounds and inches are leading to a new wave of people reaching out to plastic surgeons to get a liposuction or tummy tuck procedure, or a non-surgical body contouring treatment like VelaShape or Venus Freeze.

When the world returns to normal, you may see a lot of people re-emerging from the lockdown with a few extra pounds and looking like they’ve aged a decade. However, you may also see some people that are in the best shape of their lives and look 10 years younger.
