What is an induction melting furnace and some tips to consider while purchasing one

When you think about precious metals you need to understand that there are several processes that occur from extraction to the last stage where we get the final product. It is advisable to recover precious metals using methods that are environmentally friendly. The recovery process will involve performing the refining process all together for a great end product.

Several techniques are used to refine precious metals such as heat reduction and acid treatment but with advancement in technology,  induction heating has gained popularity due to its numerous benefits over the other methods. It completely allows for recovery and refinement of metals from source and it is energy efficient and does not use flames or gases that would otherwise be harmful to the environment.

How Does An Induction Melting Furnace work?

It makes use of a conductive coil made of materials such as copper which allows passage of electric current which in turn creates electromagnetic fields as it passes through the coil. Once an alternating current passes through the coil, the electromagnetic fields flow in opposite direction, there is a resistance which then creates heat. It is this heat that is generated by the flow of current and and the magnetic fields on the metal’s surface that smelts the metal during the induction heating process.

Looking at how the induction melting furnace is built, it allows for more heat to be retained during the melting process as it is made of thermal insulation materials hence minimal heat loss. It makes use of non contact heating which basically means less pre-heating time before kick starting the metal smelting processes. The furnace has a high thermal efficiency and also saves energy as it does not produce very high temperatures during the process.

Looking To Purchase An Induction Melting Furnace?

One needs to choose an induction melting furnace that is  safe for use and one that is in line with your business needs depending on the product you will be smelting.  Here are five tips as you make your decision:

1. Daily production needs of your production chain.

This will determine the performance of the equipment. Induction furnaces with high power and low frequency are necessary for large heating volumes and vice versa.

2. Melting Frequency.

If will be smelting metals on a daily, then you will need a furnace that is durable and can withstand high melting frequency.

3. Daily heating rate.

If your heating rate is fast, you need a furnace with a large power and high frequency.

4. Types of metals.

The types of metals you will be smelting also play a key part as you purchase a furnace. You will need to pick one with low frequency and a relatively low power if you will be smelting small granular shaped volumes. A high frequency and high power is required when smelting metals with irregular shapes.

5. Melting points.

Consider the melting points of the metals you will be smelting since those with low melting points require low power while those that are highly resistant to heat and take time before generating joule heat need a furnace with high power.
