2020 AutoShow opens in Toronto with an emphasis on electrification

TORONTO, Ont. — Federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Navdeep Bains and Ontario Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Vic Fedeli joined Canadian International AutoShow President Susan Gubasta on Thursday to officially open the 2020 Show. 

Shortly before the official opening ceremony, Minister Bains announced an $8-million federal government contribution to the development of a province-wide fast-charging network for electric vehicles.

“Our government is committed to supporting innovative, green infrastructure projects that will bring us closer to a competitive, zero-emissions transportation sector,” said Mr. Bains. “Today’s investment will ensure that Canadian-made solutions are at the forefront of solving the global climate change crisis, leaving our children and grandchildren with a healthier planet and cleaner air to breathe.”

Opening weekend of the AutoShow coincides with the Family Day long weekend, which includes a full slate of activities at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre:

  • It’s Magic! — Visit ONWARD (and a bit backwards): The Pixar Vehicle Experience to see a live wizard performing magic tricks. (South Building, 600 Level)
  • Light Up the Night — Daily live engine fire ups in Auto Exotica, presented by Sirius XM. Hear the roar and rumble each night a 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm. (North Building, 100 Level)
  • Autographs — Meet 2019 Nissan Micra Cup Champion Marco Signoretti for photos and autographs from 2 pm to 4 pm each day this weekend. In the Nissan booth (North Building, 300 Level)
  • Live Radio — AutoShow Radio debuts on 640 Toronto, from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday. Tune in to hear all the latest on the transformative times in the automotive industry. 
  • AutoShow Live —At the Toronto Star stage this weekend:
    • Saturday — The OPP, a panel discussion with the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame and The Rise of eSports gaming. 
    • Sunday — The Canadian Automobile Association to discuss edibles and driving, a panel discussion on racing in Canada and a look at the career of Canadian race car driver Ron Fellows — with Ron Fellows. 
    • Monday — Drone Delivery Canada, the OPP discussing baby seats and a panel discussion on the impact of movie cars on popular culture with Justin Sookraj from the Oblivion Car Show.
