Special Weather Statement issued for Toronto — TORONTO, ON., Dec. 31, 2020 — So, New Year’s isn’t exactly going to be starting off right. For the first day of 2021, Environment Canada says Toronto and most of southern Ontario can expect to see freezing rain on Friday late evening and overnight.

Canada’s trusted weather source says that on Friday evening “a brief period of freezing rain or ice pellets is possible and it may also be mixed with rain or snow. Some ice accretion is possible. Precipitation will take almost every form transitioning to rain or snow later Friday night or early Saturday morning.”

Environment Canada says this precipitation is associated with “a low pressure system moving north from Texas. There is still some uncertainty with the exact track of the system as it approaches Lake Erie, which will affect the exact timing and duration of the freezing rain.”

Look for additional freezing rain warnings as the event draws closer.

Meanwhile according to Accuweather, tomorrow during the day will see mostly clouds and a high of 2 degrees with occasional sunny periods, so your New Year’s Day walks should still be safe.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm.
