TORONTO, June 14, 2022 – June’s full moon, commonly referred to as a ‘Strawberry Moon’ will be a larger and brighter full moon rising above Toronto at 9:50 pm Tuesday night. If the weather co-operates (it is supposed to be a clear night until 3 am), it will be the best chance to get a photo of a full moon in 2022 as it is also a ‘supermoon’ which means the full moon will be at its closest distance in its Earth’s orbit.

“The common definition of a supermoon is any full Moon that is at a distance of at least 90% of perigee (which is the point at which the Moon is closest to Earth). June’s full Moon stands at 222,238.4 miles (357,658 km) away — comfortably within that cut-off point,” reads the description in the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Also, NASA explains that a ‘supermoon’ will appear approximately 17% bigger and 30% brighter than the faintest or most distant full moon of the year. According to space.com June’s full moon is the second of four back-to-back “supermoons” this summer in the northern hemisphere.

The Algonquin Native American tribe in the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada named the June moon a Strawberry moon. No it doesn’t mean the moon will take on a strawberry hue, it merely referred to their region’s strawberry harvesting season.

How to see the Strawberry Supermoon in Toronto

According to timeanddate.com the moon will be at its peak fullness (fully illuminated by the sun) over Toronto at 9:51 pm on Tuesday and this supermoon appears full from Sunday evening through Wednesday morning. The moon will rise in the east over Toronto after sunset, and shine extra bright all night before setting in the west just before sunrise.

Because the moon will be closer and according to NASA, the lowest of the year, if skies are as clear tonight as the weather experts are predicting (until 3am when it clouds over), Torontonians will be able to make out some details like it’s famous ‘cheesy’ craters just by looking through binoculars or basic telescope.Even with the naked eye you may be able to see the massive highlands and lowlands of the moon.

Of course, watching the ‘Strawberry supermoon’ rising will be best viewed away from the city’s light pollution, but watching it climb above the city from Toronto’s Lake Ontario shores is always a magnificent and breathtaking experience.

Enjoy the clear skies and giant bright supermoon over Toronto tonight! The Toronto Sunset is at 9:01 pm and by then the moon will be highly visible in the eastern sky.
