OTTAWA, ON., Aug. 13, 2020 — The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“Canada welcomes the announcement made today by Israel, the United Arab Emirates and the United States that Israel and the UAE will begin normalizing relations. We see this as a historic and positive step toward peace and security in the region.

“We are also pleased that the Israeli government has announced its decision to suspend the annexation of parts of the West Bank. As a friend and ally of Israel and a friend to the Palestinian people, Canada remains strongly committed to a two-state solution, including the creation of a Palestinian state living side-by-side in peace and security with Israel, and a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.

“Canada will continue to work toward facilitating peace in the Middle East and upholding the rules-based international order.”

U.S. President Donald Trump posted a joint statement on Twitter today after tweeting out this morning that a peace agreement had been made between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. “HUGE breakthrough today! Historic Peace Agreement between our two GREAT friends, Israel and the United Arab Emirates!” said President Trump.

He later released the statement below, detailing the agreement.

The historic diplomatic breakthrough will advance peace in the Middle East region and is a testament to the bold diplomacy and vision of the three leaders and the courage of the United Arab Emirates and Israel to chart a new path that will unlock the great potential in the region,” reads the joint statement.

President Trump, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyyahi of Israel, and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Aby Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates spoke today and agreed to the full normalization of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

Delegations from Israel and the United Arab Emirates will meet in the coming weeks to sign bilateral agreements regarding investment, tourism, direct flights, security, telecommunications, technology and other areas of mutual benefit.

“Both Prime Minister Netanyahu and Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan express their deep appreciation to President Trump for his dedication to peace in the region and to the pragmatic and unique approach he has taken to achieve it,” the statement concludes.
