TORONTO, March 17, 2020 – Today, following the declaration of a province-wide State of Emergency by Ontario Premier Doug Ford at Queen’s Park, Toronto Mayor John Tory said he fully endorses the provincial announcement to protect the health of residents and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Toronto’s mayor said, “I hope the seriousness of this declaration will ake it clear to every resident how important their personal actionsl will be in the coming dys.

“If people can stay home then stay home and limit your interactions with other people. We know from our medical professionals that engaging in social distancing will protect people’s health and the health of their family and their neighbours,” asserted Mayor Tory.

Mayor Tory thanked all of the city’s frontline workers and reaffirmed that we must continue to follow the recommendations of our public health professionals doing everything possible to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and “protect our residents and our city.”

Ahead of the announcement, Mayor Tory rallied the city on Twitter by suggesting a big party in the spring if the virus is well under control. Tory tweeted, that Torontonians should “Please celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at home this year.” And that by avoiding the “green beer crowd scenes today – as public health officials advise – he will “promise to proclaim a nice spring day after has been vanquished as St. Patrick’s Day 2 in Toronto and we will party!”
