TORONTO, ON., Oct. 9, 2020 — Ontario is reporting 939 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday — the province’s highest-ever daily number of new cases for the second straight day. This marks a 17.8% rise in cases with 44,900 tests were completed.

Yesterday, the province reported 797 cases, four deaths and completed a record 48,500 tests.

Sadly, there were 5 new deaths reported today with two of the deaths reported from long-term care homes. 624 of Ontario’s 939 cases are in people aged 20-59.

Several sources are saying that Ontario’s cabinet will be discussing dialing back the regional hotspots of Toronto, Ottawa and Peel to a modified version of Stage 2. This will include prohibiting indoor dining — including food courts, bars and nightclubs — and closing gyms, cinemas, casinos and conference venues.

Ontario’s Health Minister tweeted this morning “Locally, there are 336 new cases in Toronto, 150 in Peel and 126 in Ottawa. There are 724 more resolved cases.”

Other GTHA areas with numbers on the rise include York Region with 68, Halton with 59, Hamilton with 40 and Durham with 32 new cases reported.

It is expected that the recommended closures will not extend to schools, child-care centres, colleges, universities or courtrooms.
