There was an extremely bright flash over Toronto around noon today that could be seen right across southern Ontario, the Lake Erie area and parts of New York State.

The EarthCam on the CN Tower caught incredible images of the bright flash lighting up Toronto’s downtown area.

Dr. Denis Vida, a meteor physics postdoctoral researcher at the University of Western, says a fireball the size of a basketball broke up as it entered the Earth’s atmosphere about 50 kilometres north of Syracuse. Dr. Vida said this is uncommon and that a fireball is basically a bright comet.

Experts say the meteor was travelling at approximately 1000 km/h and was too small to do any damage.
