TORONTO, Oct. 24, 2022 – John Tory has been elected for a third and – what he declares – final term as Mayor of Toronto. The victory was declared by several Toronto news outlets within about 20 minutes of the polls closing at 8:00 p.m. with Tory having a landslide 61 per cent of the vote. Finishing a distant second out of 31 candidates is Gil Penalosa with about 18 per cent of the vote.

“Serving as your mayor in this great city continues to be the honour of a lifetime. I love our city and I love working for the people of this city, that is why I ran for re-election in the first place,” said Tory at his victory party at the Fairmont Royal York on Monday night. “We have come so far over the last eight years but we have unfinished business that I am absolutely determined to see through. We have made so much progress on getting transit and housing built and growing our economy and now we have a strong mandate to continue with that progress.”

“Thank you for your support, Toronto! I know Toronto’s best days are ahead,” said Tory. “With the strong mandate we’ve received from the people of Toronto tonight, I look forward to making real progress for you and for all those who come to our great city to build their life here,” said the three-time Mayor of Toronto.

Meanwhile, runner-up by a large margin, Gil Penalosa said, “All my ideas are available to Mayor Tory,” said Penalosa. “Everything is doable, and it’s doable with the existing budget.”

‘I love our city and I love working for the people of our city.’

Newly re-elected Mayor of Toronto, John Tory

At 10 pm Tory has about 333,000 votes while Gil Penalosa is sitting at about 97,000 votes. In other GTHA cities, both incumbant Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, and Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie celebrated landslide victories tonight, while in Vaughan and Hamilton in particular, the races are still too close to call.

In terms of moving the Toronto forward over the next four years,” Mayor Tory said. “We are going to work with the provincial and federal governments to keep getting the big things done. We are going to get housing built, we are going to get the $28 billion transit plan built, we are going to do everything we can to keep our city affordable for the residents who live here and those who want to live here and we are going to do everything we can to keep our city safe and support the police as they continue to modernize,” said Toronto’s newly re-elected Mayor John Tory.
